"the closest thing to poetry is a loaf of bread or a ceramic dish or a piece of wood lovingly carved, even if by clumsy hands." Pablo Neruda
Fall registration is now open!
Classes begin September 27, 2011
As the beautiful summer breeze begins to find its way through the windows, we are planning a season of fun and creative writing experiences that will leave you with a writer's notebook filled with memories, writing prompts, a play or story completed, and a handmade book of this season's theme: "The Color, Taste & Sounds of a Story: Descriptions in Poems, Stories, and Prose". We hope you can join us for several weeks of board games, story wheels, magnetic stories, story cubes, laughter, and of course, lots of writing.
Here at Quills, we are serious about the craft of storytelling and playing with words, but as writing doesn't take place in a vacuum, we will be collecting leaves, sea shells, looking at freshly cut flowers, photos of summer, and visiting a local cafe, a monument, or a nearby park --all things that will help to fill our writing notebooks with life's sounds, images, and experiences.
An important part of this workshop's philosophy is the intricately bound relationship between reading and writing. Writers can select from the fiction and non-fiction list below (this is an optional list) for works they will read as part of our book circle discussion.
Book choices: If you have read all of the books on the list, you can see me for more suggestions.
Thank you to our wonderful young writers who participated in the Spring 2011 session!
